This traffic-free metropolis of a ski resort will stun you with its exceptional shops, restaurants and nightlife. Zermatt is home to the Matterhorn (or at least the best views of it), providing some of the most picturesque back drops anywhere in the alps. The centre of Zermatt does not have the quaint and rustic feel that other traffic-free resorts exude, but if you take the time to explore, you will find some unbelievably beautiful areas of old Zermatt which will delight any traditionalist. You will not find this place hard to get around, despite the 'no cars allowed' rule, electric taxis and luggage trolleys await your arrival to ensure that you can get around quickly and easily.
The snow in Zermatt is always reliable due to the fact that it has some of the highest slopes that you will find in Europe. For the lower-down areas there are dedicated snowmakers everywhere you look, which keeps the runs skiable, if not quite the same. Zermatt ski area offers a variety of different skiing which is suitable for everyone from all kinds of ski-backgrounds. In particular, we love the easy blue runs that you can find at the top of the the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise lift; allowing beginners to stretch their legs with magnificent views of the Matterhorn. For experts we dare you to try the Triftji Bumps (a daunting mogul field); and we recommend that you follow some off piste from the Klein Matterhorn, all the way down towards the Italian border which is some of the most challenging and exciting terrain in Zermatt.
This unique village, which boasts the highest altitude in Europe, is highly commendable on many points. Its beauty is unequivocal due to its placement in the midst of the highest mountains in the Alps; while this is also the reason why Zermatt is renowned for exceptionally extreme skiing and for having the most developed ski areas. The climate is to-die-for if you are an avid skier. If it is hard to comprehend; imagine that in the peak of a hot Swiss summer, it is still possible to ski down your favourite runs in Zermatt. This is not a place that you will ever be disappointed for not quenching your thirst to hit the snow.
