ZermattResort Guide - The Skiing
The Skiing in Zermatt
Zermatt is one of the top ski resorts in the world and boasts a huge ski area at high-altitude, with staggering views of the impressive Matterhorn. The skiing is accessible from the village centre via cable car, funicular or the Gornergrat mountain train, which takes you on a spectacular ride up to 3089. Zermatt has something for everyone, whether you are an experienced skier or a complete beginner.
Over 95% of the slopes across the Zermatt ski area are over 2,000m which makes the resort a relatively snow safe option. Zermatt can also boast the highest top station in Europe! From the top, those brave enough can attempt the long 2,200m drop of skiing back to resort centre in one go, although we prefer to stop off for lunch in one of the superb restaurants for lunch along the decent.
Zermatt has three main ski areas; The Klein Matterhorn has beautiful open runs and superb off-piste skiing towards the Italian border into Cervinia. The Gornergrat has a vast choice of runs and some of the most difficult skiing in the region. Sunnegga can be reached by skiing or by taking the underground railway from Zermatt town. This is an area of sunny, open blue and red skiing; perfect for intermediates and beginners. There are also many brilliant rustic mountain lunch spots in the area.
Other good spots for beginners include the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise lifts at the top of the village which lead to wide, open runs which are perfect for those new to skiing. The nursery slope, 'Wolli Park', on Sunnegga paradise, offers magic carpets and rope lifts. All 3 areas, Rothorn, Gornergrat and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise provide a vast range of wide, satisfying blues and reds for intermediates. Zermatt is also a mecca for expert skiers. The 'Triftji Bumps' mogul field, Schwarzsee's steep gullies and various black runs will satisfy even the most advanced, and the yellow itinerary runs provide extremely exciting skiing.
