ZermattResort Guide - Moutain Dining
Mountain Restaurant Guide Zermatt
Chez Vrony is the acknowledged favourite for mountain dining in Zermatt, its terrace on sunny days is unbeatable with its absolutely magnificent view of the Matterhorn. So many people come here for the view alone.
The style of this restaurant is just incredible, they have managed to keep the traditional wooden features of a mountain chalet without the shabby Alpine chic that can be very common in these restaurants; Chez Vrony exclusively uses top-quality silver and glassware, coupled with their beautiful white linens and furs draped over various pieces of furniture. The dècor is not the only reason why Chez Vrony is where you can find the most luxurious lunch on the mountain, the atmosphere here as well is electric and friendly while we found the waiting staff attentive without being intrusive.
Chez Vrony pride themselves on their traditional cuisine with just a hint of some exotic flair thrown in; personally we would recommend the rösti as a common favourite of the diners here and the trout dishes are divine. Chez Vrony also provides a pretty lively après ski if you are keen for some drinks and music after a long, lazy lunch; however, it can be slightly irritating if you're enjoying a late lunch and do not want the end of your lunch to be hijacked by some increasingly rowdy après going on.
This little place is quite off the beaten track, and well worth the seeking out if you are able to make it; the panoramic views from the terrace are just phenomenal to behold and include a glorious visage of the Matterhorn. You must head to the village of Findeln in order to get there, if you are skiing you should go up the Sunnegga chairlift, but it is also possible to get here on foot for the skiers who are a little bit timid, although it is a bit of a walk from there so be prepared.
We highly recommend that you book in advance as this place is a very popular mountain restaurant in the Zermatt ski area and tables can be difficult to get on popular days. Yet the staff are also very accommodating, so if you are passing by it is always worthwhile popping in on the off chance to see if they have a cosy corner for you.
The cuisine is quite unique to Zermatt with typical Swiss dishes served with Italian specialities and touches of flavour and style from all around the world. We recommend that you try the mussels and the steak tartare to see just how well the Swiss-German's can rival the French on the quality of these dishes.
Restaurant Zum See
This restaurant is situated in the picturesque hamlet of Zum See which will just melt your heart if you are fond of quaint little Swiss villages on the mountain. If you are on skis you want to head down from the top of the Furi lift on the walking paths leading to the hamlet, these paths tend to not be very steep but you should take care if you are not a confident skier as you must have good control when skiing down a path that may have walkers idling their way along it as well.
Zum See's connection to walking paths is beneficial to members of your party who may wish to walk up to meet you for lunch, although this is still a good half an hour trek if you are a strong walker. An easy walk from Zermatt for a non-skier also means that Zum See has not got a very high altitude which may disappoint some who want absolutely spectacular panoramas to dwell on over lunch.
Restaurant Zum See is fittingly traditional in their Alpine surroundings and we most highly recommend the dried meats and cheese platters to share, but ensure you leave enough space for dessert here as the sweet stuff on offer is just to die for.
